Well there it is—up above—the trailer for next week's episode of Game of Thrones.
We only have three left, dear readers. Whatever will we do when it's over? I'll be honest, this show is just about my favorite thing to write about, and my favorite thing to share with you all. When it's gone, I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with myself.
We worry, endlessly, about which of our favorite characters will die. But here's the truth about finishing a good book series—or a good TV show—when it's over, all our favorite characters may as well be dead. Gone, but not forgotten, as the saying goes.
We have three episodes left. And now that—SPOILERS—the Night King is dead and the heroes of Winterfell have succeeded, and we know who Azor Ahai is, well . . . what now? What comes next? What should we expect?
I have some thoughts, naturally. I have no idea if they'll be correct, although I will say this:
I was correct about the Night King not going to King's Landing. I was correct about our heroes finishing off the army of the dead in Episode 3. And I was also correct about the crypts being a very terrible place to hide your old, infirm and weak. I've been right about a few things lately, and wrong about plenty of other things. So let's talk about what comes after the Battle of Winterfell.
On the surface, it's the war between the survivors of the North and Cersei's much fresher forces in King's Landing. In the North we have a much-depleted force of Unsullied, Northerners and Vale Knights, a handful of Dothraki and one or two dragons (two, I think, but only one is confirmed alive).
In King's Landing we have a diminished Lannister force alongside Euron's magical fleet and the Golden Compay, a mercenary force 20,000 strong. But no dragons. In the above trailer we hear Dany talking about taking the fight to Cersei, and so that's where the fight will go. As we're all aware at this point, Daenerys Targaryen, mother of dragons, wants nothing so much as that Iron Throne Cersei is currently keeping warm.
I expect we'll encounter a few things in the next three episodes:
- Another (not quite so epic) battle, this time between forces of living.
- Cleganebowl, as Sandor and Gregor Clegane finally throw down, and the Hound wins (but dies in the process).
- A conflict between Dany and the Starks, with Tyrion caught in the middle and no Jorah around to make Dany consider better and more moral actions.
- Jaime will ultimately kill Cersei. Kingslayer becomes Queenslayer.
- Tyrion and Sansa tie the knot again (sorry I'm shipping this one folks)
- A final showdown between Jon and Rhaegal and Dany and Drogon.
- Oh sorry, did I not mention I think Daenerys will go Full Targaryen in the end? I hope I'm wrong, but it just feels like she'll follow all her worst impulses now that Jorah is gone, and Jon is a clear and present danger to her succession to the Iron Throne (not to mention stubborn Sansa).
In the next episode, however, I predict only the groundwork for all of this being laid. No grand battles. No grand betrayals. Only setup for things to come. Episode 5 will be the big battle between Cersei and the good guys, and the finale will shake out all the rest, finally establishing who sits on the Iron Throne—if there is an Iron Throne left to sit on.
'We'll rip her out, root and stem,' Dany tells the victorious North. I'm not so sure it will be as easy as all that. There is no Azor Ahai to clean up this mess, after all.

The trailer for the final ever episode of Game of Thrones has teased the showdown fans were hoping wouldn’t be the case.
In the penultimate outing of the HBO show, Daenerys took matters into her own hands as she took Missandei’s final word quite literally and burnt King’s landing to the ground.
Jon Snow, Tyrion and Arya watched on in horror as the Dragon Queen commanded Drogon to wipe out thousands of innocent civilians, including women and children, essentially becoming the Mad Queen – a plot twist fans were hoping would not be the case.
We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view.
From 15p€0.18$0.18USD 0.27 a day, more exclusives, analysis and extras.
Next week, the show’s final episode airs and it’ll show Daenerys come face-to-face with the characters who survived the ordeal. Quite what their response will be remains to be seen.
